Lantheus Current Global State of Mo-99 Production

March 18, 2011

Dear Nuclear Medicine Professional,

Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, their families, and friends, during this terrible crisis. Lantheus Medical Imaging is presenting this letter as a means of offering you information that may assist in providing insight into this crisis and how nuclear reactors are differentiated based on their design and purpose.

Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) is procured from nuclear research reactors, not nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power reactors heat water under pressure to extremely high temperatures to produce steam, which is used to generate electricity. Nuclear research reactors are used for academic research and the production of medical isotopes and are inherently safer than nuclear power reactors, as they are smaller, cooler, generally operate at atmospheric pressure, and require orders of magnitude less power and fuel. Nuclear research reactors also can be accessed more easily and cooled and shut down more quickly with smaller quantities of water and with less extensive requirements for continued power supplies.

Our own supply of Mo- 99 is produced in research reactors in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Netherlands, and South Africa and none of these reactors are either co-located or within a close proximity to a nuclear power reactor.

The tragedies in Japan remind us of the fragile human condition and our dependency on technology. Together, our industry strives to provide patient care solutions that incorporate the best available technology. We hope this letter helps in advancing your knowledge of our business and how research reactor technology differs from high energy reactor technology. We do not believe that the recent events occurring at the nuclear power reactors in Japan will have any adverse impact on our supply chain for Mo-99. By providing insight into these important differences, we hope that your customers will better understand and continue to support the return of a vibrant nuclear imaging business on behalf of patient need.

Gaining the confidence again of patients and providers in our business continues to be an important initiative for Lantheus Medical Imaging as we believe so strongly in nuclear medicine as a health care solution. We will continue to provide frequent updates regarding our ongoing work with our Mo99 Suppliers. In addition, we encourage you to visit our website at

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to our continued partnership in meeting your nuclear medicine needs.

Sincerely,
